Backwards thinking
June 12, 2009You know those nutjobs who obsessively reverse pop songs and then claim they’ve found “coded” messages about Satan/drugs/behaving like a ninny? Yeah, I’ve never understood them. Because if you think how unbelievably hard it would be to pronounce something forwards that sounds like something else backwards, and then find something that sounds intelligible (but different) both backwards and forwards (eg sounds like “yes we can” forwards but “thank you satan” backwards) and put it in a song without it sounding strange… ow, my brain.
Hopefully, the video below will illustrate just how bonkers that is. This guy’s listened to a song backwards many times, learnt it and videoed himself singing it backwards, so that when he plays the video backwards, the song plays forwards. Again, ow.
It’s pretty impressive, but it still doesn’t sound quite right forwards, especially in some places. See for yourselves:
Now find me someone who can work out a phrase that will sound one way forwards, and another way backwards, saying different things (ideally one good and one satanic) and then get them to do it flawlessly in front of you.
Yeah… didn’t think so.
